In previous years , we purchased so many horses for trail riding that were spooks, ill tempered, or just total idiots. (not the horses fault, it was the trainers) we got tired of undoing other people's mistakes and decided to raise our own. We have 8 broodmares and DUSTY . In previous years we did stand Dusty to the public. It was just to hard on me and I really was not set up for it. Ourown mares got neglected and it seemed there was always MUD and more MUD during breeding season. We now focus on raising and selling foals by our stallions and out of our mares. |

I ( Darla ) raise AQHA horses and my husband tolerates it. We are located in Owensboro, Kentucky on a country road, but only 6 miles from the Vet!
Our home is only 1,660 sq. feet, but I spend most of my time at the barn. My goal is to raise horses with versatility, great conformation, super dispositions, and intelligence. Color is a plus.
Our Stud, Dusty, has done a great job so far. We do not have a big fancy operation. It is small and in my customer's eyes probably considered very primitive. All of my time and most of my husband's money go to the horses. They get the best of care, feed, hay, best farrier and best Vet. |

We do not have a gorgeous designer barn or fancy rigs...but my husband was kind enough to build everything, barn, sheds, fencing and stall. All built with the comfort and safety of the horses in mind and best of all...it is all paid for! |
From the time each of our foals hit the ground, I familiarize the foal with everything I can think of from firing guns to walking in traffic. My goal is to teach them so much in the short time they are here ... that when they are mature enough to be trained, they will be prepared for anything and learn quickly with no spook in them. Yes, they are spoiled, but they are all very well mannered and respect us. We have foals in 15 states and one in Germany. We have many repeat buyers and have become close friends with several repeat buyers. |

My husband has a REAL job. He is a Millwright. Between jobs he is my help and when I can get by with it, I take a day off (to do housework) and leave it all to him. Of course I gripe the next day because he didn't do something correctly ( at least in my eyes he didn't ) and he gripes because he hated every minute of caring for the horses, but I am hard to please. He is a super nice guy, and anyone that meets him likes him immediately. He is patient, soft spoken and he always saves the dog part of his sandwich...those are just a few of his good traits. (He has bad ones too)
I am the bad guy. The one who has to fuss at the mechanic, the kids, the bad hay guy. Johnny just stews and fusses about it to me, and makes me handle all the problems.
I guess the only thing that can anger me is if someone unjustly hurts my horses, children or my husband. I am very opinionated. I will either like you or I won't and either way you will know it. My husband said that when he met me he loved that I spoke what I felt...now sometimes (maybe all the time) he wishes he could tape my mouth shut. I am really great training foals. You may not like me, but you will love my horses and you will appreciate my honesty. UPDATE.:JOHNNY HAS RETIRED AT THE AGE OF 55. |

I drive a 18 year old truck and I dress worse then a bag lady. My truck hasn't been washed in 2 years, (my son washed it then) but the horses get bathed. UPDATE: Several things were going wrong with my truck and of course I got to get a car, an old buick, almost junk. I always have gotten the horrible vehicles in this family. Guess I should appreciate it and be happy I have something to drive. I do miss my truck.

After Johnny's 94 chevy diesel hit over 250,000 miles, he conned me by using my horses as an excuse, or him to buy a brand new Dodge truck... telling me how much easier getting my hay would be. and how much safer hauling my horses to Sales and delivering my horses to Buyers. Again, I agreed just to keep peace.I think it is UGLY (must be a man thing) |
My Vets are Eastside Animal Clinic and Wills Animal hospital , both in Owensboro, Ky. Our horses love them ( with the exception of Sadie) and we do too. We purchase my feed at Mullicans Feed Mill. John Roberts is my farrier. Super great man. Just married and he and Rebecca are expecting a child. |
Our Horse Trailer is plain, but safe. No one looks twice at our trucks and trailer when we pull up, but when we start unloading, the crowd is at our trailer, Plain trailer, gorgeous horses...we can live with that. I would rather have a horse that looked like it was worth $65,000 then to have a trailer worth $65,000 and unload a $600 horse. (which I see often)
But if anyone would like to GIVE me a $65,000 trailer I would take it! |
I LEAD A VERY GLAMOUROUS LIFE! (See above photo) I am the Buyer, Seller, Vet and Farrier appointment maker. Groomer and Queen Pooper Scooper. When Johnny is working, he never knows what is going on at the barn. Once I sold two horses and he didn't notice it for 10 days. I will say he is super about getting hay, even in 110 degree weather. He also keeps me in bedding (sawdust and straw). |
FINALLY! A hay barn which opens up 5 stalls in our old barn! |
